We've all heard about CANZUK. Or have we? There has been some recent interest in the concept of CANZUK - an alliance between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. The reason for this recent uptick in interest (which can interestingly be verified on Google Trends) is, considering the unprovoked trade war started by the US against Canada, not accidental.
The world order is changing, and so the Anglosphere needs to adapt, too. The US has not only become an unreliable partner -- Americans have shown the world that they are willing to put in charge a dangerous man freelancing as a clown, twice. It is clear that the pax americana is coming to an end, and western democracies need to realign and decouple from America - fast.
This isn't to say that America has become an enemy, not at all. It is still a strong Western ally, but its support for NATO, freedom, democracy and the West in general cannot be taken for granted anymore. And so the countries that still care about western values should stick together in new alliances.
CANZUK could be one way forward. Its members are united by a common language, similar cultures, a shared history, similar forms of government under the same monarch and similar legal systems that can draw upon each other's precedents under Common Law. I think CANZUK would be the UK's natural home after leaving the EU.
When you think about it, the UK has more in common with CANZUK than it ever did with the EU -- an institution of 27 countries speaking different languages, with vastly different cultures, all joined under one Commission whose members most Europeans have never heard of. The UK's interests would be much better served within CANZUK. This is not to say that another superstate like the EU should be attempted. Centralising power only opens the door to the potential for authoritarianism. CANZUK should rather work as an economic, military, and cultural alliance of independent countries. It shouldn't become a schizophrenic attempt by flag collectors to expand left and right without a strategy.
CANZUK has the potential to reshape and give new purpose to the Anglosphere, becoming a beacon of freedom at a moment when America is driving itself mad and the world is becoming more dangerous. Work to deepen ties within CANZUK should be prioritised.
